With an intention to provide alternate connectivity to Mumbaikars, the plan to construct the Mumbai Metro took shape in 2006, when the foundation stone for phase-I according to Mumbai Metro map was laid. However, operational and policy delays resulted in delays to the metro routes in Mumbai project. Today, there are only three Mumbai Metro routes that have been commissioned. Of this, two are new metro lines in Mumbai.
Construction work of Phase 2 of Metro 2A is 98% complete and Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) plans to start trail runs for these two metro lines from October 2022. MMRDA is also planning to start commercial operations of these two metro lines by the end of December 2022. Once operations of both the phases of the Mumbai Metro lines – Line 2A and Line 7 begin completely they will carry close to 3 lakh passengers.
Mumbai Metro lines 2 A and 7 will have two interchanges- one at Dahisar and also connect at DN Nagar metro station to the existing Mumbai Metro Line 1 (Ghatkopar and Versova).
The first phase of ‘Metro 2A’ (Dahisar to DN Nagar) and ‘Metro 7’ (Dahisar East to Andheri East) Mumbai metro routes was made operational for passengers from April 2, 2022. Inaugurated by chief minister Uddhav Thackeray, the new metro lines are expected to carry more than 3 lakh passengers everyday. The first phase of new metro route Mumbai Metro 2A is from Dahisar to Dahanykarwadi and first phase of new metro route Metro 7 is from Dahisar to Aarey colony.
There will be 11 trains of 6 coaches that will operate for both the Mumbai metro corridors of which 8 or 9 will be operational and the remaining will be standby. The frequency of the Mumbai metro trains will be around 10 minutes and operations will be for close to 19 hours a day – from 5 am to 11. 30 pm.
According HT, the second phase of the two new metro routes Mumbai may be operational by October 2022. The two new metro lines in Mumbai have already received the ‘Research Design and Standard Organization’ (RDSO) certificate in January 2022 that were given in 2 phases.
Regarding the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS) safety test, around 50% of the statutory inspection of the delayed Phase 1 of Mumbai metro corridors 2A and 7 between Dahanukarwadi and Aarey was completed on February 22, 2022. Started February 19, 2022, CMRS has asked for 7 days for completing the inspection, said a TOI report. The inspection includes examination of the railway assets- signalling, OHE, civil works, stations and platforms. The Mumbai Metro got the safety certificate on March 25,2022.

Mumbai Metro network and corridors
The Mumbai Metro route network is being implemented by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) as it is being expanded beyond the Mumbai region.
At present, only one Mumbai metro route Mumbai is fully operational and two Mumbai metro routes are opened in phases. Eight are under-construction and five metro routes in Mumbai have been approved. The first line began operation in June 2014, while two other new metro route Mumbai were made operational in April 2022. There are 14 metro routes in Mumbai with an extension of two more lines. Other metro routes in Mumbai under construction include Metro Line 2B (D N Nagar to Mandale), Metro Line 4 & 4A (Wadala-Kasarvadavali–Gaimukh), Metro Line 5 (Thane to Kalyan), Metro Line 6 (Swami Samarth Nagar to Vikhroli), and Metro Line 9 (Andheri to CSIA and Dahisar to Mira Bhayander).
According to MMRDA, the civil works of all these Mumbai metro lines have already begun and they are expected to be ready by 2022-2024.

Also known as the Yellow Line, this is a 42-km-long Mumbai metro route on the network and has two sub-sections – 2A and 2B. The 2A section will be an 18-km corridor between Dahisar-Charkop-DN Nagar with 17 Mumbai metro stations. The MMRDA has renamed 15 of the 17 stations owing to citizen demands of the metro station being location specific. According to the MMRDA list, two 2 stations whose name is not changed are Dahisar East Metro station and Eksar Metro station. The new names of metro stations are mentioned in the box above. Reports suggest that there are demands of changing name of Pahadi Eksar Metro station to Shimpoli.
The 2B section will link DN Nagar-BKC-Mankhurd and will be 23.5 kms long. The estimated cost for this project is around Rs 17,000 crores. To travel in Mumbai first phase of metro route 2A and 7, the minimum fare is Rs 10 and the maximum fare is Rs 40. The fare is decided on the basis of the distance in kms that the Mumbai metro route covers. The Mumbai metro trains operate between 6 am and 10 PM with fares being Rs. 10 for 0 to 3 km, Rs 20 for 3 to12 km and Rs 30 for 12 to 18km, Rs 40 for 18 to 24 km and Rs 50 for 24 to 30 km. For now ticketing is handled via QR code-based mobile and paper tickets. Smart cards and app-based season tickets will be launched later. While initially metro travellers will have to buy tickets daily, the metro pass will be issued after 2 months.

Also known as the Aqua Line, Mumbai Metro route Line 3 is 33.5 km long completely underground and covers the distance between Cuffe Parade in south Mumbai and SEEPZ and Aarey in north Mumbai. It will have with 26 underground Mumbai metro stations and one at-grade station This Mumbai metro route will also pass through the Mumbai Airport which will further boost the connectivity in the region.
The total cost of construction of this route was previously pegged at Rs 23,136 crores. Citing cost escalation, the Maharashtra cabinet on August 10, 2022 approved an additional expenditure of Rs 10,269 crore for the Mumbai Metro Line 3 project with the cost now being Rs 33,405 crore.
Metro Line 3 is funded by Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). With the new costs, JICA now will increase its contribution from Rs 13,235 crore to Rs 19,924 crore. By 2031, 17 lakh passengers are anticipated to travel by Metro Line 3 daily. “The tunnel work has been completed 98.6 per cent, while 82.6 percent work on stations, too, has been done. Acquisition of 73.14 hectares of government land and another 2.56 hectares of private land has also been completed,” said Devendra Fadnavis, deputy chief minister, Maharashtra.

Also known as the Green Line, Mumbai Metro Line 4 will connect Kasarvadavali in Thane to Wadala in south-central Mumbai. This Mumbai metro route will boost connectivity between Mumbai and Thane and decongest the local train network. The expected cost of this project is Rs 15,000 crores. Known as the Red Line, Mumbai Metro Line-7 is a 33.5-km-long Mumbai metro route that will connect Dahisar with Andheri and further to the Mumbai International Airport. The route will have 29 Mumbai metro stations, of which 14 will be elevated and the remaining will be underground. Operations on the Mumbai metro route were expected to start in 2020. However, the COVID-19 pandemic delayed the civil work on the line.
Construction work of phase -2 of Metro line 7 is 98% done. While phase 1 of Mumbai Metro line 7 started operations in April 2, 2022, trials for phase-2 is expected to start in October 2022 and the commercial operations are expected to start by December end 2022.
Additionally, the MMRDA will build a foot overbridge at Goregaon station on Metro Line 7 that will connect to the Goregaon western railway station.
Mumbai Metro route: Line 8
Known as the Gold Line, this is a proposed Mumbai metro route between the Mumbai Airport and the Navi Mumbai Airport. The approved length of this Mumbai metro route is 32 kms and the project will be built at an expense of Rs 15,000 crores. Around eight metro stations have been proposed on this route.

The Mumbai Metro Line-9 is an extension of the Line 7 and Metro-2A (Dahisar to DN Road). This corridor will cost Rs 3,600 crores and will connect Gaimukh-Shivaji Chowk (Mira Road or Metro-10). The Mumbai metro route was expected to start in 2019 but procedural delays have pushed the timeline to October 2024.

Mumbai Metro Line 10 and 11 are extensions of Mumbai Metro Line 4, also known as the Green Line. These lines will connect Gaimukh to Shivaji Chowk (Mira Road) and Wadala to CSMT. The foundation stone was laid by PM Narendra Modi in 2017. The work has started on these lines and is expected to become operational in 2022.

This Mumbai metro route is planned as an extension of Mumbai Metro Line 5. It will connect Kalyan with Taloja and will boost connectivity in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.
Mumbai Metro route: Line 13
This is a proposed Mumbai metro project which will connect Mira Road with Virar. This 23-km-long Mumbai metro route is estimated to cost around 6,900 crores. At present, the detailed project report is being created for this route. The expected date of completion is in 2026. This will be also known as the Purple Line.
Mumbai Metro route: Line 14
Known as the Magenta Line, this is an approved Mumbai metro route that will connect Vikhroli with Kanjurmarg and further to Ambernath-Badlapur. It will have an interchange with Line 6, the Pink Line. This project is also at the DPR state and will cost around Rs 13,500 crores. This Mumbai metro route is to be completed by October 2026.
The Navi Mumbai Metro will have the smallest trains—with three cars, expandable to six coaches—in the state. Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation (Maha Metro) has been appointed by the City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO) for running services on Line 1 of the Navi Mumbai Metro project for 10 years. This line is from Belapur to Pendhar and consists of 11 stations, 11 km track, a depot for maintenance at Taloja. Navi Mumbai metro will be made operational in 2022.
